OnlyFans DRM Video Protection: What It Stops (and Doesn't)

OnlyFans DRM video protection explained: how to turn it on, what it blocks, why photos and old videos aren't covered, and what to do if videos still leak.

Wondering whether OnlyFans DRM video protection actually stops leaks? Here's what the setting does, how to turn it on, what it can't stop, and what to do when a protected video still gets out.

OnlyFans DRM video protection is one of the most useful free settings on the platform, and one of the most misunderstood. Some creators think it makes their content impossible to steal; others have never switched it on. The truth is in between, and knowing exactly where its limits are helps you protect the content you earn from on OnlyFans, and on Fansly, ManyVids and Patreon too.

1The short answer

OnlyFans DRM video protection is a free setting under Settings > Privacy and safety that encrypts the videos you upload after you switch it on. On many devices and browsers, that means screen recorders capture a black screen and download tools can't save the file. It does not protect your photos, videos uploaded before you enabled it, or anyone filming their screen with a second phone, and OnlyFans doesn't notify you when someone screenshots or records. Turn DRM on, add a watermark, and when copies still get out, let ClearTrace file the DMCA takedowns for every link.

2What OnlyFans DRM video protection actually is

DRM stands for digital rights management. It's the same family of technology streaming services use to stop people saving movies. Instead of sending a plain video file that any browser extension can grab, OnlyFans sends an encrypted stream that only a licensed player inside the browser or device can decode.

Two things follow from that:

  • Downloading gets much harder. The "save video" extensions and scraper tools that leakers rely on can't simply copy a file they can't decrypt.
  • Screen recording often fails. On devices that use hardware-level DRM, the decoded picture is marked as protected, so the operating system hands screen recorders a black frame instead of your video.

The important word is often. DRM has different security levels, and how strong it is depends on the fan's device, operating system and browser. Some desktop browser setups only support software-level DRM, which blocks easy downloads but may not black out every screen recording. Think of DRM as a lock that stops casual copying, not a vault.

3How to turn on DRM video protection on OnlyFans

The setting takes about a minute, and it's off until you turn it on.

Step by step

  1. Log in to OnlyFans and open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and safety.
  3. Scroll to the Safety section near the bottom.
  4. Switch on Enable DRM video protection.

If you work with an agency or a management tool, check the toggle in the creator account itself. Team tools generally reflect the account setting rather than overriding it.

What about videos you already posted?

OnlyFans says DRM protection applies to videos you upload after you enable it. Your back catalogue stays unprotected unless you re-upload it. You don't need to redo everything at once. Start with what's most valuable and most likely to be saved:

  • Your best-selling pay-per-view videos and bundles.
  • Pinned and recent feed videos new subscribers binge first.
  • Anything that has already leaked once. Leakers come back for more from the same creator.

Before you delete and re-upload a post, note its caption, price and any fans who bought it, so you don't create confusion or lose sales history you care about.

Turn DRM on before you build a big library. Every video you upload with it already enabled is one you never have to re-upload.

4What DRM does stop

Used properly, DRM removes the easiest ways content walks out the door:

  • One-click downloader extensions and "OnlyFans downloader" scripts that save raw video files.
  • Bulk scraping of an entire video library by someone who subscribes for one month and rips everything.
  • Many built-in screen recorders on phones, tablets and computers that support hardware DRM, which record black instead of your video.

Bulk ripping is how a lot of full "megapacks" end up on leak forums and file hosts, so making it harder matters. It won't stop every determined leaker, but it raises the effort enough that many casual ones give up.

5What DRM doesn't stop

This is where most creators get caught out. DRM is narrow, and these routes stay open:

Photos and previews

DRM protects video playback. Photos, preview images and thumbnails can still be screenshotted or saved, so your watermark is the main built-in protection for images.

Older uploads

Anything uploaded before you enabled DRM isn't covered until you re-upload it.

Weaker DRM on some devices

Fans on browsers or systems that only support software-level DRM may still be able to screen record, sometimes at reduced quality.

Filming the screen

Nothing in software can stop someone pointing a second phone at their monitor. The copy is worse quality, but it still gets posted.

Leaks that don't come from fans

DRM only protects what fans stream. It does nothing about a compromised account, a shared login, a chatter or editor with vault access, or files stored in a cloud folder with a public link. Those leaks start with your original files, before DRM is ever involved.

DRM-protected videos still leak, often as cropped or filmed copies. ClearTrace finds copies even when they aren't posted under your username, including cropped, resized or edited ones.

6Can OnlyFans detect screenshots or screen recording?

No. OnlyFans doesn't notify creators when a subscriber takes a screenshot or screen recording, and it doesn't show you which fans tried. Most people use OnlyFans in a web browser, and websites can't see what screenshot or recording tools are doing on someone's device. DRM blocks some recordings, but it doesn't report them.

That matters for two reasons. First, don't rely on warnings like "screen recording is detected" in your bio; fans who test it learn it's a bluff. Second, you usually find out about a leak only when copies appear online, which is why searching for leaked content regularly, or having it scanned for you, is part of protecting your page.

What fans do agree to is OnlyFans' terms. The OnlyFans Transparency Center explains that content belongs to the creator and copying it breaks the platform's terms, and your copyright protects it wherever it's reposted. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that copyright exists from the moment you create a work, so you don't need to register your videos for takedowns to apply.

7Will DRM cause playback problems for fans?

Sometimes. OnlyFans notes that DRM may limit playback for fans on older devices, and creators report a few subscribers who see an error or a black player. For most creators, that trade-off is worth it, but plan for it:

  • Keep a short support reply ready: "My videos are protected so they can't be stolen. If one won't play, try updating your browser, switching to Safari or Edge, or watching on your phone."
  • Watch for patterns. If several fans report the same device, tell OnlyFans support instead of turning protection off.
  • Don't refund on reflex. Ask fans to try an updated browser or another device first; that often fixes it.

8Build the rest of your protection around DRM

DRM works best as one layer of several:

  • Watermark everything. OnlyFans' free watermark puts your text on media, and a mark placed where it's hard to crop proves ownership on photos and filmed copies that DRM can't protect. Our guide to watermarking your content covers placement.
  • Lock down your account. Use two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, a unique password, and review active sessions regularly.
  • Limit team access. Give chatters and editors only the access they need, and remove it when they leave.
  • Keep dated originals in private storage so proving ownership takes seconds.
  • Check your other platforms. If you also sell on Fansly, ManyVids or Patreon, look through each one's privacy and content settings for similar protections. Don't assume they match OnlyFans.
  • Keep scanning. Prevention lowers how often content leaks. Monitoring catches what still gets through.

9If a DRM-protected video still leaks

It happens, usually as a filmed, cropped or re-encoded copy. Don't message the uploader. Screenshot each page with its URL and the date, then follow our leaked content checklist to work out how far it has spread. If you can, compare the leaked copy with your upload dates and watermarks. That can tell you whether it came from a fan's screen or from your original files, which tells you what to lock down next.

For the removal itself, we recommend ClearTrace. ClearTrace files the DMCA notice for every link with one click, so you're not hunting for abuse contacts or writing legal notices yourself. Your dashboard tracks every link from found to removed, and removals are independently rechecked so you can see what actually came down. If you want to know what happens behind the scenes, read how DMCA takedowns work.

A free ClearTrace scan checks 200+ leak sites plus Google and X. Telegram coverage means public channel pages that are indexed in search. Your own accounts are whitelisted so they're never flagged.

10Let ClearTrace handle the takedowns

DRM makes your videos harder to steal. ClearTrace handles the copies that get out anyway. We scan 200+ leak sites plus Google and X, find copies even when they aren't posted under your username, including cropped, resized or edited ones, and file the DMCA notice for every link with one click. Your dashboard tracks every link from found to removed, removals are independently rechecked, and your own accounts are whitelisted so they're never touched.

No removal guarantees: each host decides whether to act on a notice. You see the real status of every link.

Frequently asked questions

Does OnlyFans have DRM?

Yes. OnlyFans offers free DRM video protection that you switch on under Settings, Privacy and safety, "Enable DRM video protection". It applies to videos you upload after you turn it on.

Can OnlyFans detect screen recording?

No. OnlyFans doesn't detect or report screen recordings to creators. DRM can make recordings come out black on many devices, but it blocks rather than detects, and it can't stop someone filming the screen with another phone.

Does OnlyFans notify you when someone screenshots?

No. Creators get no alert when a subscriber screenshots a post, message or pay-per-view unlock. A visible watermark is the protection that survives a screenshot, and ClearTrace finds copies even when they're cropped or edited.

Does OnlyFans DRM protect photos?

No. DRM covers video playback only. Photos, previews and thumbnails can still be saved or screenshotted, so watermark your images and keep dated originals as proof of ownership.

Can DRM-protected OnlyFans videos still be leaked?

Yes. Weaker DRM on some devices, filming the screen and account or team leaks all get around it. When copies appear, ClearTrace files DMCA takedowns for every link and tracks each one from found to removed.
